Board Approves Fund to Preserve Stanhope Stables as Open Space

The Huntington Town Board has approved the purchase of farmland development rights, in partnership with Suffolk County, for Stanhope Stables, allowing it to continue as an equestrian site, and preserving it as open space.

The future of the stables became an issue last year when the owner looked to sell the 13-acre property and a developer stepped forward with a plan to build 59 homes under cluster zoning rules. Neighbors quickly organized to oppose both the loss of another equestrian site and new housing in the area, and the developer’s plan was withdrawn.

The board voted unanimously Tuesday to approve spending  $981,833, using money from the Open Space Land and Park Improvements Reserve Fund.

Suffolk County Legislator Rebecca Sanin addressed the board before the vote, saying, she wanted to express “A heartfelt thank you to the board for working with the county hand in hand and to make sure we are preserving land. It’s not just about preserving the environment, not just allowing more horses to be rescued, but also about improving mental health. It’s a win win.”

Under the plan, the stables will continue to operate while preserving the space in the future.
