Jessica McClain set a course record Saturday to capture the prestigious Great Cow Harbor 10k race in Northport with a time of 31:40.

Biya Simbassa won the men’s race, finishing at 28:18.

The race unfolded under excellent conditions, unlike last year’s rain-soaked competition. Simbassa set the course record two years ago.

While it has long been an important competition on the national calendar, the race was designated as the 2024 USA Track & Field National 10K Championship. The race, which brings in about 5,000 runners each year, typically draws competitors from around the country.

In addition to the 10k, the day’s events included a 2k Fun Run/Walk drew about 1,000 participants, and the dedication of the rebuilt basketball court at Northport Village Park.

Cow Harbor celebrations continue Sunday with a parade beginning at noon at the Brosnan building, proceeding to Main Street lined with artisan and business vendors, music performed in the gazebo, visit and decorated boats and boat race.

Some adults and kids alike wore cow-themed costumes, as is tradition; several firefighters also ran in full gear. As is typical of races, friends and families gathered to cheer on their relatives as they ran by; One child held up a sign that read, “Daddy, you are beating all of the people behind you,” while another noted that a 10k race required a big commitment just to collect a free beer. Several runners stopped for a moment to hug their children who were rooting them on.

    Top finishers.
