The South Huntington school district released proposals that the Board of Education will consider for reconfiguring the use of its school buildings.

The proposals involve moving to mostly neighborhood schools that offer k-5 classes, though a sixth-grade center would continue.

School officials foresee a large savings on bus costs the ability to offer universal pre-k classes to all students in the district, as well as deal with deteriorating portable classrooms.

    The proposals.

In three of the four proposals, the Memorial building on Pigeon Hill Road would become the new sixth-grade center, while sharing some space with other grades; in the fourth plan, sixth grade would remain at Silas Wood.

The board will present the plans to the public at a Tuesday forum at Walt Whitman High School, 7:30 p.m.

    Further sessions are planned:

    • 10/9 Follow Up Discussion with Community Input – 6:30pm Whitman PAC
    • Small Group / Community Feedback at PTA Meetings:
    • 10/8 at Stimson (SW/SMS PTA) 7pm
    • 10/15 at Maplewood 7pm
    • 10/16 at Birchwood 7pm
    • 10/17 at Oakwood 7pm
    • 10/21 at Countrywood 7pm
