The South Huntington Board of Education has pulled the plug on an ambitious plan to realign its schools  after running into community opposition.

The plan, known as Reimagining South Huntington, would have altered the grade levels served by five of its seven schools. The district announced in September that four proposals were under consideration. The plan was meant to address difficulties with providing transportation services, dealing with portable classrooms that have deteriorated, as well as add universal pre-K to any district families that applied for it.

The schools are currently set up as k-2, 3-5, 6th, 7-8, and 9-12.

Objections to the proposals included expressed concerns about harming the diversity of schools in a district where 53 percent of the students are Latino, cost and availability of buses,  safety on buses when younger children are transported with older primary students, and access to special programs such as music.

A handful of parents with multiple children between the grades of pre-k-grade 5  supported the changes, pointing to the fact that their children would all be in one school and on one bus, making scheduling easier.

    This story will update.
