    Schools: History Showcase; New Harborfields Principal

    The Huntington Historical Society is hosting a showcase of Long Island History Day projects representing schools from Huntington on Nov. 7 at the Conklin Barn.

    The event, which allows students in grades 6-12 the chance to explore significant moments from history, will run from 6:30-8 p.m.

    Highlighted at the showcase will be students from Huntington High School, Stimson Middle School, and Half Hollow Hills East High School.

    Susan Glaser,  LIHD Coordinator Emerita and Joseph Leavy, chairperson of Humanities for Huntington Schools, will present a variety of award-winning entries.

    The students and their projects are:

    Huntington High School

    1. Exhibit : Isabella Careccia -Johnson – Teacher, Ken Donovan
      • Unbought and Unbossed: The Political Career of Shirley Chisholm
    2. Documentary : Emma Polinsky, Kiley Barch – Teacher, Lauren Desiderio
      • White Castle: Cooking Up a Food Revolution
    3. Website : Emely Herrera Rivas, Jessica Bree, Heileen Torres – Teacher, Lauren Desiderio
      • The Pure Food and Drug Act of 1906: The Reinvention Enhancement Of The Food Industry

    Stimson Middle School

    1. Exhibit :  Abigail Andreoni – Teacher, Karen Schmitt
      1. The Lavender Scare:  A Reality That Sparked a Frontier for Gay Rights

    Half Hollow Hills East

    1. Performance : Chloe Leshnower – Teacher, Lorraine Lupinskie
      • A Bright Golden Haze on the Meadow: Oklahoma! as a Cultural Turning Point in Broadway Musical History

    New Harborfields Principal

    Dr. Philip D. Farrelly has been named principal of Harborfields Shool, effective Nov. 4.

    He will succeed Neil Lederer, who has been serving as interim principal since the departure of Dr. Marie Netto, this summer, after two years in the position.

    He comes to Harborfields from his position as assistant principal of John F. Kennedy High School in the Plainview-Old Bethpage Central School District.

    He earned his Bachelor’s degree in History and Education from Springfield College, a
    Master’s of Education from the University of Massachusetts, a School Building Leader certification from Baruch College, and a Doctorate in Administration and Instructional Leadership from St. John’s University.

    “We are very excited to welcome Dr. Philip Farrelly to the Harborfields family,” said Dr. Rory Manning, superintendent of Schools. “His extensive educational and leadership background will serve the students, staff, and families of Harborfields High School well as we continue to build on our culture of excellence.”

    Art on Display

    Northport High School’s Grace Schoonmaker from Christine Driscoll’s IB Visual Arts class has been accepted into the juried “Nightmare on Main Street” Exhibition at the Huntington Arts Council for the third consecutive year! Her piece, “Celtic Night,” was done with acrylic on canvas.
