Gail Hofstad has retired from her position as Cut Bank Middle School Principal after thirteen years of service in Cut Bank, and a total of thirty-seven years in education. Having been raised by two teachers, Hofstad decided at a young age that she wanted to be a teacher, too, and never wavered from her decision. Earning her undergraduate degree and teaching credential from Western Montana College, now known as University of Montana, Western, Hofstad began her teaching career in 1984 at Blue Sky High School in Rudyard, Montana. Hofstad’s approach of having high standards for students behavior was cemented in her first year of teaching. “I learned from the beginning how to deal with behavior because I was twenty-two my first year teaching, and some of my students were eighteen. I was going to get eaten alive or I would be the authority. And I had to think quickly on my feet and be tough.” In addition to teaching business at Blue Sky High School, Hofstad also served as the assistant high school girls basketball coach and the head volleyball coach, starting off a long career of coaching and teaching throughout Montana.
