MADISON COUNTY, Ala. (WHNT) — Right now, Enable Madison County, a nonprofit organization , needs help to make life easier on people who are homebound.

Kiliaen Anderson, Enable’s community outreach coordinator, said the organization “enables” people who are homebound to stay in their home safely, independently and with dignity.

The organization is looking for volunteers right now for several services, including its Taking Energy Measures Personally = $avings (TEMP$) program and to install grab bars and handrails. Volunteers who install grab bars and handrails will be trained first.

“These installations are crucial for helping our clients remain independent and safe by preventing debilitating falls,” Anderson said.

As with all Enable services, that service is free for the client.

Anderson explained that the TEMP$ program is an annual one-day event, in November, where volunteers help weatherize the homes of Enable’s clients.

    Volunteers will:

    • Apply plastic to windows
    • Insulate pipes
    • Caulk breaches
    • Install smoke detectors
    • Replace storm doors
    • Perform other small repairs

The TEMP$ program also requires assessors and team leaders. According to Anderson, assessors are volunteers who receive training to evaluate eligible homes for the services to be completed during TEMP$.

Team leaders have to attend training sessions and select homes for their teams to winterize.

If someone is physically unable to help, there is an option to help Enable Madison County celebrate its 45th anniversary! The organization wants to have 45 ramps sponsored by local groups, individuals, and businesses before the end of this year.
