HUNTSVILLE, Ala. (WHNT) – Senior tenants who live in the Mayfair Towers housing complex spent years without an answer from property management about the maintenance issues that have plagued the building.

The tenants reached out to News 19 for answers and a resolution to those repairs.

As previously reported, there has been no manager in the building and no full-time maintenance technician for quite some time.  News 19 uncovered several issues in the building.

Faulty air-conditioning units, broken washing machines, water leaks and rodents are a few that were discovered.

After viewing our story Huntsville city councilman Bill Kling met with the tenants and ensured them that city and state leaders are holding Redwood, the building’s management company, accountable for their lack of action.

Linda Hoyt, an 86-year-old tenant, stepped in as the property attendant. Hoyt spent 9 years stepping in to get things done.

“The residents are very frustrated, and I’m frustrated,” Hoyt explained.

Redwood Communities ignored tenant complaints for quite some time. But for the past week, maintenance crews have been performing those requests.

Crews have been performing those requests including replacing the washing machines and fixing leaks.

Hoyt and the tenants are thankful that the repairs are finally being done.

“I want to thank Channel 19 News because they have been tremendous in helping us get things accomplished here and drawing it to the attention of the management,” said Hoyt. “I want to thank Bill Kling who got involved with this too.”

Mayfair Towers resident Carol Harris, who also worked as a property attendant, told News 19 that several issues still need attention but are grateful for the city’s response to the problems.

“They just carried that out there and just let everybody know what was going on because there was so much happening here that was suppressing that,” Harris said.

Both Hoyt and Harris say they are awaiting pay from Redwood for their hours worked as attendants.
