HURRICANE, Utah ( ABC4 ) — Officials in southern Utah were able to take a man into custody after he barricaded himself in a home for more than five hours on Thursday, July 4.

Officials were first called about the situation around 4:15 p.m. on Thursday, July 4. The call was about a “possible suicidal male,” according to a joint press release from the Washington County Sheriff’s Office and the Hurricane Police Department.

“It was reported the male was armed and in the street in front of his house,” the press release said.

The man was armed with a rifle and a handgun, according to officials. He was barricaded in his home and negotiators were working to find a “peaceful resolution,” the press release said.

As the situation was unfolding, Hurricane Police issued a shelter-in-place order. Residents were also asked to refrain from setting off fireworks during the incident.

Just after 9:30 p.m., officials were able to take the man into custody.

“He was taken without injury to himself or officers,” an update from officials read.

The surrounding areas of the incident — the 3400 block of 290 North — remained closed to traffic during the investigation, officials said.

There is no further information at this time.
