HURRICANE, WV (WOWK) – The Hurricane community is mourning the loss of a long-time public servant.

According to Hurricane Mayor Scott Edwards, former councilman Reggie Billups passed away Friday morning after a battle with cancer. Mayor Edwards says Billups served as a member of the Hurricane City Council for 43 years, and served on the Hurricane Water Board and various other committees during his time on the Council.

Edwards even says Billups was his first boss at the city’s Wave Pool in the late 1980s. Billups was well known for his tenure as a football coach and educator at Hurricane High School. Edwards says he will be missed my many people throughout the city.

“Coach Reggie Billups helped shape hundreds and hundreds of young adults’ lives during his tenure as a football coach and educator at Hurricane High School.  While serving the citizens of Hurricane for 43 years on City Council, he was always ‘for the kids’, which made it real easy for me to serve alongside him.  This is a huge loss for Hurricane and he will be missed for years to come,” Edwards said.

The mayor asked the community to pray for Billups’ loved ones as they grieve.
