HURRICANE, WV (WOWK)- The annual Hurricane Independence Day Parade took place Thursday on Main Street. Despite heavy rain, the show went on and brought out a large crowd.
The parade featured first responders, beauty queens, luxury cars, some creative floats put together by local businesses, and more.
Red, White and Buffalo: Putnam County town celebrates Fourth of July 13 News spoke with one parade goer who said that the rain didn’t bother her one bit.
“We just ran in the ice cream shop for some ice cream when it started raining, then we came right back out. The parade was great, the kids loved it, we all loved it,” said Linda Hunt, a Hurricane resident.
Who won the 2nd annual Charleston Sternwheel Regatta hot dog eating contest? The parade was just the start of a day full of events to celebrate the 4th of July.
Hurricane City Park hosted a free family activity day that went from 3 p.m. to 8 p.m.
The park was set up with food trucks, inflatables, a petting zoo, and featured a live music performance from by The Creek Don’t Rise.
Free ice cream cones, cotton candy, and watermelon was also handed out.
Ripley hosts annual 4th of July Parade, celebration 13 News spoke with the Mayor of Hurricane, Scott Edwards, who spoke on how important giving back to his community on Independence Day is.
“Giving back to the community is of the utmost importance, to me and all of City Council. That’s why we like to do all this for free. It’s so important on a day like Independence Day to give back,” said Mayor Edwards. “That’s why we make it free for everybody, so everybody can come here. There’s nobody that can’t afford it, we want everybody here.”
The day was capped off by a fireworks show that started at 10 p.m.
