HURRICANE, WV (WOWK) – Putnam County Schools are looking into building a brand-new Hurricane Middle School.

According to Putnam County School Board President Rob Cunningham, the board has had two recent meetings and met with ZMM Architects and Engineers to figure out what building a new school would cost.

“The main criterium is that we do not raise the taxes,” Cunningham said.

Cunningham says the proposed bond for a new school would fall between $8 and $10 million less than the bond they just paid off.

While the new middle school is the big ticket item on that bond, other projects will benefit from it as well. Cunningham says the bond money will be used to help update other schools in the area.

The board president says this would include replacing sports field lighting with LED lights, updating bleachers, and rebuilding press boxes at a couple of the local schools. Winfield High School, for example, has had two press box fires.

According to Cunningham, this would help to improve the overall safety for athletes, school staff and patrons at sporting events.

The bond has been added to the Putnam County School Board’s Aug. 5 meeting agenda, where it’s expected to be voted on. If the board approves it, the bond will be added to Putnam County’s November ballot.
