    Sheriff: Driver not at fault in accident that killed pedestrian in Randolph County

    HUTTONSVILLE, W.Va. (WBOY) — The results of the investigation into a fatal auto-pedestrian accident that happened in Huttonsville on Tuesday have been released.

    In a release on social media , Randolph County Sheriff Rob Elbon said that a driver was traveling on Route 250 near the Par Mar in Huttonsville when a woman, later identified as Debbie Bennett, 41 of Huttonsville, walked into the roadway and was stuck by the vehicle.

    Lifesaving measures were performed on Bennett, but she died while being transported to the hospital by EMS, Elbon said.

    The release said that Bennett was wearing headphones, looking at her phone and facing away from oncoming traffic and that the driver “had no ability to avoid the pedestrian.” The driver remained on scene and “assisted the best way he could,” according to the release.

    Elbon also said that standardized field sobriety testing on the driver showed no signs of impairment.

    “My investigation concludes that this is an unfortunate tragedy and that the driver is not a[t] fault,” Sheriff Elbon said in the release.

    According to the release, statements from witnesses in the area said that Bennett never saw the vehicle before she was struck.

    HUTTONSVILLE, W.Va. (WBOY) — One person is dead after an auto-pedestrian accident in Huttonsville on Tuesday.

    Just before 2 a.m. on July 9, a vehicle accident involving a pedestrian was reported at the Par-Mar in Huttonsville, according to a release from the Randolph County Sheriff’s Office . The pedestrian was killed in the collision, the release said.

    The accident is still under investigation, and no other details were released. The sheriff’s department said that it is withholding the name of the victim until family members are notified.

    Several deputies and Sheriff Rob Elbon responded to the collision. Sheriff Elbon said more details will be released after the investigation is complete.
