Officer awards, public safety report, Kent Commons renovation & more discussed at Tuesday’s Kent City Council meeting
Here’s our recap of the Kent City Council meeting held on Tuesday night, Feb. 20, 2024:. Kent Police Chief Rafael Padilla had several annual awards to bestow on stand-out officers. 2023 Officer of the Year went to Kevin Bateman, who has been with Kent PD for 28 years. Chief Padilla pointed out that Bateman is one of very few who have served longer than Padilla himself. According to the chief, Officer Bateman has a heart of gold. He utilizes his math aptitude as a collision investigator of the highest level. He is also lead instructor for the drone program. In addition, Bateman volunteers with Shop With a Cop.

Public Health – Seattle & King County on Feb. 16, 2024 closed Shanasheel Restaurant in Kent for “excessive critical violations.”. “Public Health lists the reason(s) the establishment was closed. Reasons for closing an establishment may be due to food code violations and failure to follow the permitting process. Depending on the type of closure, additional information may include the date the facility was shut down, whether the establishment has reopened, the date it reopened, and additional notes.
First degree charges filed against suspect in Kent Trooper shooting case
On Friday, Feb. 16, 2024, a Washington State Patrol Trooper was shot several times in Kent and was seriously injured. Host Families sought for international exchange students

Washington State Trooper shot in leg during pursuit in Kent
A Washington State Trooper sustained serious injuries after being shot in the leg during a pursuit on Friday night, Feb. 16, 2024 in Kent. According to the Washington State Patrol (WSP), the incident began shortly after 11 p.m. on Friday night, when a Trooper attempted to pull over a vehicle near the Driftwood Apartments complex (map below). The vehicle fled the stop, and a pursuit was initiated.
Man fatally shot on King County Metro Bus in Kent Friday afternoon
A man was fatally shot aboard a King County Metro bus in Kent on Friday afternoon, Feb. 16, 2024. Officers responded to a 911 call around 1 p.m. reporting the shooting on the bus, which had stopped in the 200 block of Central Avenue South (map below). They found a 29-year-old male suffering from a gunshot wound who had exited the bus.
