The Century and Preston High School baseball teams went back and forth just like district rivals should.

The two 4A South East Idaho Conference teams split Thursday’s doubleheader encounter at Halliwell Park. The Diamondbacks took the opener 10-7, before the Indians rallied back with a 6-3 win in the nightcap.

Century (3-9 overall, 1-2 4A South East Idaho Conference) was anchored by Elias Blackhawk. He combined for five hits, including a triple and a pair of RBIs.

Ben Call and Gavin Flynn added three hits. Flynn also drove in three runs.

Austin Gleed and Conner Thomson totaled five hits each for Preston (3-6, 2-1). They also both drove in a run.

Janson Hollingsworth chipped in with three RBIs, while Eli Hammons held the Diamondbacks' batting order in check during the nightcap by allowing just five hits.

    GOODING 13, SODA SPRINGS 3, 6 INNINGS

Trey Stephens’ RBI triple was one of only three hits for the Cardinals (1-9) in a nonconference loss Thursday at the Glenns Ferry Wood Bat Tournament.

    HIGHLAND 14, BLACKFOOT 6

Taylor Stringfellow racked up three hits, including a double, and six RBIs, as the Rams (8-6, 3-0 5A District V-VI Conference) picked up a nonconference win Wednesday.

Drew Hymas and Cannon Eddie each added two hits apiece. Both of Eddie’s hits were doubles, while Hymas had a triple and drove in three runs for Highland.

Cole Robinson and Dax Whitney had two hits each for the Broncos (9-4, 5-1 4A High Country Conference) in the loss. Robinson also drove in a run and Whitney hit a home run. Blackfoot still lost despite its pitching staff combining for 10 strikeouts.

    PRESTON 7, CENTURY 4

Conner Thomson threw nine strikeouts, as the Indians (2-5, 1-0 4A South East Idaho Conference) opened league play on the right note Wednesday.

Jaxon Merrill and Janson Hollingsworth had two hits apiece. Merrill drove in two runs as well for Preston in the win.

Gavin Flynn and Elias Blackhawk notched two hits each for Century in the loss. Flynn also drove in two runs.

AMERICAN FALLS DROPS DOUBLEHEADER TO SOUTH FREMONT

Gavin Adamson totaled three hits and drove in a run, but it wasn’t nearly enough, as the Beavers (1-4) dropped a 17-2, 9-3 nonconference doubleheader Wednesday.

Adamson also threw seven strikeouts on the bump in the opener.

    SOFTBALL

    BLACKFOOT 10, SKYLINE 5

Quincy Cronquist racked up three hits, including a pair of home runs, for a game-high seven RBIs, as the Broncos (6-5, 3-1 4A High Country Conference) doubled up their league rivals Thursday.

Emma McGuire and Kylee Pratt chipped in with two hits and a RBI apiece for Blackfoot in the win.

    POCATELLO SWEEPS PRESTON IN DOUBLEHEADER

Kaylee Sullivan combined for four hits, including a pair of doubles, and six RBIs, as the Thunder (8-3, 2-0 4A South East Idaho) dominated in their Class 4A South East Idaho Conference opener with a 12-2, 13-0 doubleheader win over Preston Wednesday.

Kaylee Sullivan, Taylee Rogers, Sophie Campbell, Grace Mickelson and Oakley Hirschi also all totaled four hits apiece. Hirschi drove in six runs with four of those coming on an inside-the-park grand slam in the nightcap.

Rogers and Campbell were both impressive in their respective outings in the circle, as well. Rogers fanned 11 batters and allowed just three hits in the opener. Campbell followed that up by throwing a one-hitter on seven strikeouts.

Averie Madsen and Kylee Chatterton were the only Indian (1-7, 0-2) players to register more than one hit in the two games with two each.

MARSH VALLEY 7, SNAKE RIVER 2

Shelby Scharfen tossed a one-hitter with seven strikeouts, while having two hits herself, as the Eagles (6-4, 1-0 3A South East Idaho Conference) started league play on the right foot Wednesday.

Maya Anderson added a game-high three hits, including a double, and a RBI. Morgan Ketner chipped in with a pair of hits for Marsh Valley.

Hailee Nash’s RBI double was one of only two hits the Panthers (4-5, 0-1) had all game.

    MALAD 10, BEAR LAKE 0, 5 INNINGS

Riglee Peterson recorded three hits, including a home run, and three RBIs, as the Dragons (6-0, 1-0 2A South East Idaho) cruised in their league opener Wednesday.

Peterson also earned the win in the circle by allowing just two hits and striking out six batters.

Hallie Horsley and Kaitlyn Pickett added two hits apiece. Horsley went yard too for Malad, which extended its nearly two-year unbeaten streak to 37 games.

Halle Perkins and Sadara Preece had the only two hits for the Bears (4-8, 0-1) in the loss.

    SKYLINE 15, BLACKFOOT 13

Oaklee Vanorden and Marlee Piper logged three hits and two RBIs apiece, as the Broncos (5-5, 2-1 4A High Country Conference), gave up six runs in the bottom of the seventh inning to fall in league play Wednesday.

Quincy Cronquist had three hits for Blackfoot in the loss, too.

AMERICAN FALLS ROLLED BY SOUTH FREMONT IN DOUBLEHEADER

Halli Lott had two hits, including a home run, for a pair of RBIs, as the Beavers (1-6) struggled in a 16-0, 16-4 doubleheader nonconference loss to South Fremont Wednesday.

American Falls was no-hit as a team in the opener.

SODA SPRINGS 20, WEST SIDE 5

Abby Goodin and Liz Hunsaker tallied two hits apiece, as the Cardinals (2-4, 1-0 2A South East Idaho Conference) rolled in their league opener Wednesday.

Hunsaker also drove in a game-high four runs.

Brynlee Hemmert and Aspen Davis chipped in with three RBIs apiece for Soda Springs in the win.

Sara Groll had two hits for the Pirates (0-6, 0-1) in the loss.

    TENNIS

    CENTURY SWEEPS RIVAL POCATELLO

Both the Century boys and girls tennis teams came away with bragging rights during Thursday’s match against Pocatello at Capell Park.

The boys rebounded from their first loss of the season to Highland Tuesday with a dominating 4.5-1.5 win. The girls had a little bit of a tougher time, but pulled out a 3.5-2.5 victory over the crosstown rivals.

    Both groups swept singles play.

Century head coach Sean Kane noted Kate Spicer’s 7-5, 7-6 win over Reagan Lyon, who is the defending district champion. Spicer is only a freshman.

But Bel Miller was equally as impressive with her 6-2, 7-5 win over Jensyn Morgan in No. 1 singles.

On the boys’ side, Max Sheng didn’t drop a single set in his 6-0, 6-0 win. He is also just a freshman.

Tiden Lynn/Kallon Spicer won in No. 1 boys doubles.
