    Several running in Bingham County commissioner GOP primary

    What does a County Commissioner do? They perform all of the legislative and executive duties of a county, such as supervising all county officers, boards and commissions; supervise all elections; make policy; pass ordinances and resolutions; manage county property; pay the county’s bills and acquire property when needed. Additionally, in a judicial role they decide who doesn’t have to pay property taxes — usually non-profit organizations such as churches.

    Commissioners’ terms of service vary so the local turnover is staggered. For instance two county commissioners are elected every two years, but one is for a 2-year term and one is for a 4-year term. This year Commissioner District 1 is the one with a two-year term.

    Both District 1 and District 3 commissioner seats are being contested and all will be decided in the May primary since only Republican candidates filed to run. Also, everyone in Bingham County will vote for both commissioner districts, even if they don’t live in that district. All the more reason to learn about all the candidates.

    Each of the candidates were asked to answer the following question in 150 words or less. “What, specifically, do you want to accomplish as a county commissioner and why are you qualified to do so?” Their responses are listed alphabetically.

    Commissioner District 1:

    Mark R. Bair

    “The most important thing I would like to be a part of is the development of new area of impact agreements with the cities in Bingham County. Legislation was just passed that requires counties and cities to make an agreement by July of 2025, and I believe I can help with that process.

    I also want to continue my work on the jail expansion and courthouse remodel. I have been working on these projects from the beginning, and they are still a year from completion.

    Finally, I would like to continue working to bring new businesses into Bingham County. Last year, we successfully brought in two companies that will be great assets to our community.

    I have 11.5 years of experience holding this office. This work is important to me. I am proud to serve the residents of Bingham County, and will continue to do so responsibly. Experience Matters!”

    Drew Jensen

    “I have owned my own successful business in the ag industry for over 40 years. I am currently serving as vice chairman of the Bingham County Planning and Zoning Board. I have over 20 years of board experience and enjoy representing those that I serve.

    In serving as commissioner, my main goal would be to listen to the concerns of county patrons and respectfully work towards solutions. I would like to unite our county so all districts and communities are equally served and represented. I would like to be a good public servant, and not a career politician. Taking a conservative approach towards change is vital, while allowing for opportunities for business growth and development. Continue to maintain a balanced budget.

    Communities can grow by choice or chance, so you need a vision. As a community we need to inventory our assets and shape our community around them.”

    Stephen R. Woolf

    “As a county commissioner, I aim to modernize our county budget by implementing advanced governmental accounting principles. This will enhance fiscal responsibility, ensure efficient resource allocation and promote transparency in financial matters. Moreover, I am committed to introducing long-overdue transparency and accountability measures within the commissioner’s office to cultivate public trust and confidence in our governance.

    My qualifications for this role stem from my extensive experience in finance and governance. With a proven track record in financial management and a deep understanding of governmental accounting practices, I am well-equipped to navigate the complexities of budgeting and financial oversight. Furthermore, my dedication to inclusive and empathetic leadership ensures that all citizens in our county are not only heard but also understood, fostering a stronger sense of community and representation for all.”

    Commissioner District 3:

    Will Aullman

    “As a county commissioner, I want to actively work with the other commissioners to improve Bingham County and to provide strong, creative and independent leadership for District 3. I would specifically like to bring more unity and a greater sense of community to the county.

    The things that qualify me for this position are varied and crucial. First, I have owned a successful business for 17 years. This has given me experience of operating within a budget, working with the public and developing solutions to complex problems. Also, I have been a member of Bingham County’s Planning and Zoning Commission for seven years. This has given me vast experience in dealing with the county’s land use issues and in listening to the public. Finally, I have a degree in political science from Idaho State University. This helps me understand the complexities of government and how to work within the system.”

    Eric Jackson

    “I want to bring structure and long-term sustainability to growth in Bingham County. Our agricultural economy and rural setting will always be my priority but our families also need jobs and homes. I will work closely with community leaders to create a unified plan, lean on the professional opinion of the Planning and Zoning committee, and look at every application on individual merit.

    I currently work closely with both county and city leaders. I have spent the last 18 months as county commissioner and just now feel I am learning the intricacies of the position.

    Above all, I want to be a person that our community members feel like they can approach with their issues. I’ve always taken pride in my ability to listen and problem-solve. I want to be a voice for my constituents. Please vote for me on May 21.”
