    2024 Back Country Horsemen Trail Challenge event set for June 22

    POCATELLO — The Portneuf River Back Country Horsemen Chapter is holding a trail obstacle horse challenge that will take place in the middle of June.

    According to a news release from Portneuf River Back Country Horsemen, the event is the 2024 Back County Horsemen Trail Challenge Event. It will be held on Saturday, June 22 at the Bannock County Event Center in Pocatello.

    The purpose of a horse challenge is to help the horse become more confident and trustworthy, which will make it safer to ride on trails. It is a series of obstacles that the horse has to navigate.

    The kinds of obstacles that will be featured in a horse challenge include crossing bridges or water, backing up through obstacles, opening a gate, stepping over fallen logs and dragging or carrying items.

    According to the news release, riders of all ages and experience levels are welcome at the event. There will be categories for three age groups. The first group will be ages 12 and younger, the second will be ages 13 to 17 and the third will be ages 18 and older.

    The event will also be divided into four categories. These categories are Lead Line, Novice, Amateur and Open.

    According to the news release, the obstacle course was designed by Chapter President Debra McFarren, who also built some of the obstacles. She has participated in several horse challenges over the years.

    Participants can register on Portneuf River Back Country Horsemen's website at portneufriverbch.com . The event will be capped at 42 participants. Ribbons and prizes will be awarded for all age groups and categories.

    According to the news release, the check-in time for the event will be at 8 a.m. Participants will be able to tour the course before the competition starts.
