Pocatello police investigating possible THC jelly beans handed out during city's July 4 parade

POCATELLO — Pocatello police are investigating a report that some jelly beans handed out during the Gate City’s July 4 parade contained THC, the psychoactive ingredient in marijuana.

According to a recent Pocatello police news release, officers were notified on July 14 that some of the beans handed out during the parade possibly contained THC.

Pocatello police told the Idaho State Journal on Tuesday that the investigation was launched after officers received the report that one adult experienced minor symptoms after consuming jelly beans that were distributed during the Fourth of July parade in Pocatello.

A field test was conducted on a jelly bean and provided a presumptive positive result for THC, Pocatello police told the Journal on Tuesday. However, additional tests were then conducted and all of those results came back as negative, suggesting that perhaps the first result was a false positive, police told the Journal on Tuesday.

Officers have been in communication with the individuals who were distributing the jelly beans in question during the parade, who are being fully cooperative at this point, police said. The jelly beans in question were distributed throughout the entirety of the parade and no other individuals have reported any injuries or ill-effects, police told the Journal on Tuesday.

Pocatello police said in its recent news release that multiple samples have been sent to the Idaho State Lab for additional testing. It could take at least a month for Pocatello police to receive results from the crime lab, police said on Tuesday.

“We are aware of the concern to the public,” Pocatello police said in the news release. “At this time there does not appear to be an ongoing threat to the public, follow up will be continued.”
