MONTPELIER — The Huckleberry and Harvest Festival is set to take place next month for everyone who wants to celebrate the harvest season.

The festival will be held on Saturday, Sept. 21, from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. at the Bear Lake County Fairgrounds in Montpelier. A demolition derby will be held following the festival starting at 6 p.m. at the fairgrounds.

Julie Nelson, secretary for the Bear Lake Chamber of Commerce, said this is the third year the festival has been held.

For this year's festival, the chamber wanted to educate the community about different resources.

"(It will be) kind of like a big farmer's market and homesteading gathering," Nelson said.

The festival will feature activities provided by several local organizations. The Bear Lake County Sheriff's Department will be there to educate people about subjects such as child car seat safety.

"We've invited some other organizations," Nelson said. "The Wood Service will come to talk about wood permitting. Fish and Game will come with hunter's education."

There will also be a number of workshops at the festival.

Nelson said there will be a few presentations on various subjects throughout the day. Each presentation will be about 45 minutes long.

"People can learn the benefits of honey, Dutch oven cooking and dairy," Nelson said.

The festival will feature several vendors. The food vendors will be there throughout the day and during the demolition derby that will take place that night at the fairgrounds.

"Normal hours are going to be from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m." Nelson said. "Some food vendors will be open later to carry into the derby that starts at 6 p.m."

Nelson said they usually get a lot of people from the community to come to the festival.

"It's been building each year," she said. "We've been hoping to increase local participation with activities and education resources. It's a family-friendly environment."

The festival is also a good way for local businesses and vendors to showcase their products and services. Both chamber members and non-members are welcome to come.

"This will give businesses without a storefront an opportunity to showcase their businesses," Nelson said.

Nelson's favorite part of the festival is that it gives people the opportunity to enjoy nature and the outdoors while the weather is still warm and the fairgrounds are still open.

"It's a good opportunity for locals to take advantage of the weather and celebrate and get together one last time before the heavy winter sets in again," she said.

More information about the festival can be found on the chamber's website at bearlakechamber.us.

Anyone who is interested in being a vendor at the festival can contact Nelson at 208-220-2458. Chamber members will get a free space at the festival while non-members will have a $50 entry fee.
