This is the place to find announcements, things to do, services available, ways to contribute and “the rest of the story” about events that have happened or updates on those currently happening.

    Announcements:

    • Please note the correction about visitor’s football seating at Blackfoot High School this year. Obviously I need to experience the bleachers firsthand by attending the season’s first home game on Aug. 30 against the Preston Indians. I think I’ll still bring a blanket for softer seating.

There is a question about that first game, though — the field’s lights haven’t been installed yet. Stay tuned to find out if the lights arrive in time or if the game time will be moved to the afternoon

    • Happenings: Since this is the last week of summer, there are many school open houses, orientations or registrations this week before school starts on Wednesday Aug. 21:

    — Independence High School, 155 E. Francis St., registration is Monday-Wednesday from 1 p.m. to 3 p.m.

    — Blackfoot High School, 870 S. Fisher Ave., orientation is Thursday with seniors from 8 a.m. to 10 a.m., freshmen from 10 a.m. to noon, sophomores from noon to 2 p.m. and juniors from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m.

    — All elementary schools and Blackfoot Heritage Sixth Grade open houses are on Aug. 19 from 3 p.m. to 6 p.m.

    — Blackfoot Online Secondary School option is at the district office, 270 E. Bridge St., on Aug. 20 between 1-4 pm, by appointment.

    • This week’s Wednesday Music in the Park will feature Bluegrass Disciples. Bring a chair or blanket and enjoy some serious bluegrass at the Courthouse Square Park from 6:30 p.m. to 8 p.m.

    • Want to see the new elementary school in Blackfoot? There will be a ribbon cutting at Riverbend Elementary, 730 E. Walker St. at noon on Friday. Come tour the school and celebrate with barbecue hot dogs and fixings.

    • Blackfoot Farmers’ Market is every Saturday from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. at 1800 E. Airport Road until the end of October. Fresh corn on the cob?

    Services:

    • Idaho State Department of Parks and Recreation is giving foster families park passports to state parks through the sponsorship of Regence BlueShield of Idaho and Idaho Business for the Outdoors. With the passport also comes a program to learn camping and recreation skills.

Want to Help? The program needs sponsors for camping and recreation equipment. For details, contact the Parks and Recreation Department at 208-334-4199.

And now for the “rest of the story.”

Blackfoot’s new and greatly expanded animal shelter is progressing well. The foundation was poured and cured in July and the floor was poured on Aug. 9. This week the shelter will start to go vertical with the addition of walls. Can there be relief for the crowded animals in time for Christmas? Of course, adoption is the very best solution. Hint, hint. (208-785-6897)

    Until next week.
