A black bear suspected of attacking a child inside a tent at a private campground south of Red Lodge Sunday was captured and killed by game wardens Monday, according to Montana Fish, Wildlife and Parks.

The attack at Perry’s RV Park and Campground occurred at 10 p.m. Sunday while the three-year-old was asleep, according to her mother, Carly Findley-Dickson, in a gofundme pos t. Following the attack, she was taken to a Billings hospital, according to FWP.

The child was discharged Tuesday, reported Cowboy State Daily .

FWP staff set a trap at the campsite and worked with the campground owner to evacuate the area by Monday morning.

By Monday afternoon, FWP had captured and killed the bear, which was a subadult female.

“The black bear involved in the incident had no history of conflict,” reads a statement from the agency. “However, the bear had likely become food-conditioned and human-habituated after accessing unsecured attractants in the area. Evidence at the site matched the physical characteristics of the bear and FWP believes the bear killed was the bear involved in the attack.”

The campground is about 65 miles from Yellowstone National Park’s Northeast Entrance in Cooke City.

The bear is the latest to be euthanized by FWP. The agency euthanized a grizzly in July after the animal became conditioned to unsecured food and began damaging vehicles, campers, homes — and even a coffee kiosk — in and near Gardiner.

In light of these incidents, the agency recommends properly storing food and keeping anything with a scent out of tents when camping.
