For a community to thrive and grow, one really must try to do more than simply reside.

Service is a way to build and develop necessary skills like teamwork, planning, problem solve and follow through with task management. It provides a sense of purpose and security.

Service projects are a place where volunteers can come together and grow for a common good.

Years ago, The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints launched JustServe.org as a website where volunteers and organizations can post and search for nonprofit service needs within their communities.

This free website links together community volunteers with community needs with no discriminations.

Yes, the website is provided by the church but all those involved are not members of the church and the site is about attracting volunteers and providing a community service, not promoting the church.

Over the years, JustServe.org has grown nationwide and is a great place to find a volunteer opportunity as well as to post a need.

Many organizations such as the American Red Cross, Salvation Army and Catholic Relief Services have joined the website in hopes to contribute and volunteer services.

In 2009 Congress passed Sept. 11 as the National Day of Service and Remembrance. For the JustServe.org community, the day is very important.

As a part of honoring Sept. 11, JustServe.org is involved with many postings and opportunities to serve.

A representative of JustServe.org stresses the website will never be a way to involve just those who are part of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.

This is a site for all to use.

Though service projects need to be approved by an area JustServe representative, this is to only make sure non-profit guidelines are being followed.

JustServe states, “We may not solve world hunger immediately, but we are convinced that by serving with each other in our local communities, we are paving the way for much broader changes. Our efforts don’t need to be huge. Even small efforts can quickly add up to make a difference.”
