POCATELLO — Rick Phillips, manager of public affairs at Simplot, will retire from the company this Friday.

Phillips was born and raised in Southeast Idaho. He is a graduate from Utah State University. After working a few different jobs for a few years, he finally found his place at Simplot.

“I’ve had 34 years with Simplot,” he said.

Phillips has spent even more time residing in Pocatello — 39 years — and has no plans to move anytime soon.

Phillips said it’s been a joy to work with everyone who has been at Simplot over the years.

“So many men and women and their children and grandchildren have worked there,” he said. “The people I work with give me a great sense of pride.”

Phillips has also enjoyed the community outreach he has been able to do during his time at Simplot. Since the 1990s, Simplot has worked with local school districts to support education and local teachers.

“They’ve done such a great job of supporting local teachers for the work that they do,” he said about Simplot.

Phillips said he plans to spend time with his family during his retirement, including his children and grandchildren who live in Pocatello.

“I don’t have any big plans,” he said. “I’ll take it a day at a time. I’ll take some time off and breathe.”

Phillips’ successor as Simplot’s manager of public affairs is Andrea Gumm.

The best advice Phillips said he can give her is to become involved in the community and get to know the people.

“That’s the secret to success. Get to know and love the people,” he said.

Phillips has enjoyed his time with Simplot and now looks forward to this new chapter in his life.

“I love the Simplot family,” he said.
