Will Boise schools close for Election Day? Board officials set to decide next week

The Boise school board is considering giving students the day off for Election Day, according to a Boise School District news release Friday.

The board is slated to decide Monday whether or not to cancel school on Tuesday, Nov. 5, to accommodate the use of many campuses as voting locations, according to the release.

“Given the expected high voter turnout for the presidential election, the administration believes that canceling classes on this day will ensure a safe environment for both voters and students,” the release said.

The cancellation would apply to students in all grades.

The board also has another important item on the agenda for Monday: Members plan to discuss the district’s and the Boise Police Department’s safety, security and investigation procedures amid a “surge” of unsubstantiated social media threats, according to the release.

On Wednesday, a student was detained by police after allegedly issuing threats involving Fairmont Junior High and Capital High School, the Idaho Statesman reported . West of Boise, the Caldwell School District canceled Caldwell High’s homecoming parade and also said the homecoming dance would be rescheduled, a result of threats not yet deemed credible.

The Boise board encouraged the public to submit written testimony , attend the meeting in person or watch a livestream on the district’s YouTube channel . The meeting is scheduled for Monday at 5:30 p.m. at 8169 W. Victory Road.
