The Boise Police Department said officers shot a man suspected of armed robbery while he was fleeing an arrest attempt in the early morning hours Wednesday.

“The suspect was struck by gunfire as a result of officers discharging their duty weapons,” Haley Kramer, Boise police spokesperson, told the Idaho Statesman in an email.

At 9:30 p.m. Tuesday, police responded to a report of an armed robbery with a gun at a business located on West Fairview Avenue near the North McKinney Street intersection in Northwest Boise, the news release said.

After seeing the suspect jump a fence into a backyard on North Redway Road, police set up a perimeter around the backyard and notified nearby residents.

Police confirmed two Boise police officers fired at the suspect while attempting to make contact with and take him into custody.

Police declined to answer the Idaho Statesman’s questions about why officers fired at the suspect and the extent of his injuries.

Ada County Paramedics arrived and took the suspect to the hospital for treatment, according to the release. The suspect remained in the hospital as of 11:30 a.m. Wednesday The officers were not hurt.

The Meridian Police Department will lead the investigation into the shooting through the Ada County Critical Incident Task Force. The two officers who fired at the suspect have been placed on administrative leave in accordance with the department’s policies, according to the release.
