National Lightning Safety Awareness Week
Lightning strikes occur most often in summer months in the south. Orange Beach, Ala. – (OBA) – There are an estimated 23 million cloud-to-ground lightning flashes each year in the United States. During summer months the Alabama coast experiences rapidly formed thunderstorms. Warm temperatures allow the atmosphere to hold more humidity, and that humidity is a prerequisite for building clouds - creating conditions which may produce lightning.
The threat of strong storms returns Wednesday
After a mostly sunny start to the week, the chance for showers and isolated storms returns Wednesday afternoon. On Wednesday a cold front will drop south through the Tennessee Valley, igniting scattered showers and storms.
