And seashells, with their no-two-are-alike design, make themselves incredibly tempting to take home. But these organic souvenirs don’t exactly come free. Seashells play a vital role in oceanic ecosystems, providing homes for several shellfish. While collecting a handful might seem like a harmless act of beachcombing fun, it can have some pretty sad consequences if done on a large scale. To learn more about the environmental implications of taking seashells from a beach, we spoke to Dr. Britta Baechler, Associate Director of Ocean Plastics Research for Ocean Conservancy and a scientist who has studied the impacts of microplastic pollution on shellfish along the Pacific coast.
