Mallory Swanson's Lone Goal Leads USA To Gold Medal At Paris Olympics

Mallory Swanson 's lone goal led the United States Women's National Team to a win against Brazil in the gold medal game at the 2024 Paris Olympics on Saturday (August 10).

Swanson, 26, scored in the 57th minute to break a tie in an otherwise strong defensive match, finishing the tournament with a team-best six points and four goals. The Chicago Red Stars forward broke away on a long pass from Korbin Albert that was reviewed for offsides before being upheld by officials.

Goalkeeper Alyssa Naeher provided a crucial save in the third minute of extra time to stop a would-be game-tying goal. Naeher finished the match with four saves.

The USWNT went undefeated in Olympic play to win their first gold medal since the 2012 London Games. The Americans fielded a younger, rebuilt team featuring several first-time Olympians including fellow forwards Trinity Rodman and Sophia Smith , who entered the match tied with Swanson for the most points (5) and goals scored (3).

Saturday's match marked the last for Brazilian legend Marta , widely regarded as one of the greatest players in women's soccer history, who entered in the second half as a substitute.
