The Denver Broncos rookie quarterback Bo Nix has been named as the team's starter for the 2024 NFL season, head coach Sean Payton announced on Wednesday (August 21).

"It's Bo Time. HC Sean Payton has named Bo Nix our starting quarterback," the Broncos announced on their X account.

Nix, who was selected by Denver at No. 12 overall in the 2024 NFL Draft, will be the first rookie quarterback to open the season for the Broncos since Pro Football Hall of Famer John Elway in 1983. The former Oregon standout beat out veterans Jarrett Stidham and Zach Wilson for the starting job after two impressive preseason performances.

Nix threw for 205 yards, two touchdowns and zero interceptions on 23 of 40 passing in preseason wins against the Green Bay Packers and Indianapolis Colts.

“We had a process. We aren’t in a hurry to make those decisions. We want to see it and it’s important relative to the team that we handle it that way," Payton said on Wednesday via Nick Kosmider of the Athletic .

"I think he’s been consistent. It’s not a reflection on Jarrett or even Zach. It’s about what (Nix) has been able to do quickly," he added. "It was the overall body of work."

Payton said he notified Nix, Stidham and Wilson of his decision prior to Wednesday's practice. The Broncos will host the Arizona Cardinals in their final preseason game on Sunday (August 25) before opening the 2024 NFL season with a road game against the Seattle Seahawks on September 8.
