Why Hannah Mooney Tried To 'Scare' Husband Shay Mooney Away When They Met

Hannah Mooney admitted when she met her now-husband, she “tried to scare him off.”

She shared the story of how she met her husband, Dan + Shay star Shay Mooney , with Caroline Hobby during a recent podcast conversation. In the first of a two-part Get Real episode, Mooney spoke with Hobby about her experiences as Miss Arkansas USA, feeling lost and getting through a toxic relationship, how she met Shay and more.

“I tried to scare him off that weekend because he was like, ‘I really wanna date you,’ and I was like, ‘look, I’ve been through too much. I don’t care for games. (The) next man I date, I’m gonna marry him,’” Mooney said in a clip shared from the podcast interview. “I was like, ‘he’s gonna lead our family in Christ. We’re gonna raise our babies to love Jesus,’ and this is what you say to someone to scare them off, right? …I think he was 23 at the time, and just starting (his career). And so I was like, ‘this will get rid of him!’ …His face lit up, and I called my friend after this conversation. I was like, ‘crap, I think he loves me.’ In that moment, I was like, ‘oh crap,’ I was like, ‘no,’ and I think what scared me the most, I felt God sending me out of my little nest that I had made over the last year.”

The Mooneys got married in 2017. Since then, they’ve welcomed three children : Asher James , 7, Ames Alexander , 4, and Abram Shay , 1. They recently announced Baby No. 4 is on the way .
