Tim McGraw poked fun at a quote from one of his interviews that took place two decades ago. The iconic country artist is “still learning…not ready to get fat yet,” he said with a laugh as he shared the interview clip on Instagram on Thursday (September 12).

“I am getting old. I can feel it,” McGraw laughed in the 2004 interview clip. McGraw, now 57, went on to share how he keeps “the fire going” for himself as he pursues new goals in himself career.

“What keeps the fire going for me is wanting to get better. I still think that I’m just scratching the surface of what I wanna do. I mean, I still think I’m learning every day. I learn from other people every day. I learn from new artists. I learn from established artists. I learn from artists in other genres. So I’m always learning. And that’s the impetus for me to want to go out there and do it every time, is to try to get better. Try to prove to myself that I can get better. And there will come a point where I’ll probably, I won’t be able to do it anymore. And when that day comes, hopefully I’ll know, and I’ll be able to go fishing, turn into Elvis and get fat. …I will. Trust me. One day, I will be fat and fishing. I promise it.”

McGraw reminisced on the 20-year-old interview and said he’s “still learning” and “not ready to get fat yet,” as he posted it on Instagram. McGraw released his latest full-length record, Standing Room Only , in August 2023, and embarked on a nationwide tour by the same name earlier this year. He quickly followed the album with a 6-track EP, Poet’s Resumé, plus live acoustic renditions of some his career-spanning hits in New York, and a live version of “One Bad Habit.” McGraw’s latest album adds to decades of hits by the Louisiana-born country star, including “Live Like You Were Dying,” “I Like It, I Love It,” “Something Like That,” “Where The Green Grass Grows,” “Just To See You Smile,” “Down On The Farm,” “My Next Thirty Years,” “Highway Don’t Care” with Taylor Swift and Keith Urban , and many others.
