Saturday's college football game between Liberty (4-0) and Appalachian State (2-2) has been canceled due to devastation caused by Hurricane Helene , App State's athletic department announced in a news release shared on its official website Friday (September 27).

"App State's home football game scheduled for Saturday, Sept. 28, against Liberty is canceled due to severe impacts to App State, the town of Boone and surrounding areas caused by Hurricane Helene. The game will not be rescheduled," the department said.

The main downtown area of Boone, North Carolina, which is located near the Appalachian State University campus, was reported to be completely flooded and videos shared online showed water flowing down King Street, USA TODAY reports. Appalachian State shifted into adverse weather protocol, moving classes online and advising non-mandatory employees to avoid the campus, on Thursday (September 26) prior to storms moving through the state.

Several other events, including Friday's field hockey game against Bellarmine, as well as Fall Family Weekend and Founder's Day honoring the school's 125th anniversary, have also been canceled.

At least six people, including one person in North Carolina, have died and millions were without power after Helene made landfall in Florida as a Category 4 hurricane Thursday before weakening to a tropical storm as it continues to move north across Georgia, ABC News reported. One person was killed and another injured after a tree fell on a house in Charlotte, the Mecklenburg EMS Agency announced.

An estimated 923,379 customers in North Carolina were reported to still be without power as of 1:30 p.m. local time on Friday, according to PowerOutage.us .
