Elton John surprised fans with an impromptu performance of "Tiny Dancer" during the U.S. premiere of his new documentary, Elton John: Never Too Late, at the New York Film Festival on Tuesday (October 1), and took time to share a meaningful message with the crowd.

According to People , the star attended the premiere alongside husband David Furnish who co-directed the documentary, which celebrates everything John had to overcome from the early years of his career (both personally and professionally) to his final performance in November 2022. Speaking to the audience, the "I'm Still Standing" icon revealed that, while music has remained a constant throughout his life, it's not what brings him the most joy.

"There’s always been music through the good times and bad times . I’ve always relied on music to pull me through. Even when I was in my darkest times, I still played music, I still recorded music, so I have to say thank you to music for being the most incredible inspiration to me throughout my whole life."

In the beginning, all John wanted was to sell records and make music people loved, but overtime, the artist realized that what he really wanted out of life was much bigger than fame .

"In 1990, I got sober, and when that happened, I began to understand what was missing from my life: humility, gratitude, and faith. I had to build a foundation. Yes, music is wonderful. Fame is wonderful. But it didn’t satisfy me . Something was missing. So eventually, I found complete and utter happiness and bliss when I met David and when I had my children."

Now, at age 77, John is the most content he's ever been due in large part to Furnish and his children. In fact, he unveiled that he's "never felt happiness like I have now" and feels he's officially "done all there is to do."
