New England Patriots safety Jabrill Peppers was reportedly arrested on serious charges Saturday (October 5), hours before the team's Week 5 loss to the Miami Dolphins on Sunday (October 6).

Peppers, 29, a team captain, is set to face charges of "assault and battery, assault and battery with a dangerous weapon, strangulation, and possession of a Class B substance believed to be cocaine" during an arraignment on Monday (October 7), the Braintree Police Department confirmed to ESPN 's Mike Reiss . The alleged assault victim received treatment at the scene.

Peppers was absent from the Patriots' 15-10 loss to the Dolphins on Sunday, having been ruled out on Saturday, though he had previously dealt with a shoulder injury that limited him in practice last week. Police announced Peppers' arrest on Monday, noting that they responded to a report of an altercation between two people at a residence early Saturday morning.

The Patriots issued a statement confirming that they were "aware of an incident involving Jabrill Peppers over the weekend in which the police are currently investigating," but refrained from additional comment via ESPN . Peppers is in his eighth NFL season, joining the Patriots in 2022 after stints with the Cleveland Browns (2017-18) and New York Giants (2019-21). The former first-round pick recorded 23 tackles, one interception and one pass defensed in his first four games of the 2024 season.
