Illinois Dems finally get behind Biden

After a long week of last-minute flights to Washington, D.C., closed-door meetings and virtual calls, Illinois Democrats are now behind President Biden's re-election campaign.

The big picture: Gov. JB Pritzker and Mayor Brandon Johnson both doubled down on endorsing Biden on Tuesday, while the congressional delegation has fallen in line after some questioned the president's fitness to run again after a disastrous debate .

Catch up quick: After the debate, Pritzker told CNN he would "like to see more" and Rep. Mike Quigley told MSNBC the president should step aside .

Yes, but: After a week of Biden lobbying governors, mayors and members of Congress, Pritzker finally spoke publicly on Tuesday saying "I am for Joe Biden."

    • Other Democrats, including Durbin and U.S. Sen. Tammy Duckworth, might not be publicly talking about it, and Quigley hasn't publicly rescinded his position, but the debate seems to be coming to an end.

Zoom out: Other state delegations and supporters on Capitol Hill have also publicly supported Biden within the last few days.

What they're saying: Illinois delegates and other state Democrats have also weighed in.

    • " Why do you want to throw this man out when he has delivered on everything we've asked for?" former U.S. Sen. Carol Moseley Braun tells Axios.
    • "I join the president in saying people should just shut up, sit down, do what you have to do and go vote. I still think Biden's the only person that we've got that can beat Donald Trump."

The bottom line: Democrats here and around the country are hoping the controversy is firmly behind them, just over a month before the Democratic National Convention comes to Chicago.
