Ken Jennings did not hold back with his jokes as he took aim at one state while joking with a former senator.

On the Tuesday, July 17 episode of Jeopardy! , government relations manager from Illinois, Jay Fisher, and entry writer and grad student from Washington, Erika Stromerson, faced the nine time streak winner and customer support team lead Isaac Hirsch from California.

Ken Jennings i ntroduced each of the contestants with a fun fact that they shared after the first commercial break. Erika "regularly handles some of the oldest objects in the solar system" while Isaac revealed that he shares the same birthday, August 8, as his girlfriends father and brother. When it came to Jay, he admitted to being a former state senator but for 22 hours.

Jay said: "Probably the shortest 10 year senator in Illinois history... 22 hours." He continued: "In 2018, my senator lost his bid for re-election and decided to step down. The new governor called a lame duck session so I got down there at 2o'clock in the afternoon, made some votes that afternoon and the next morning and then the new general assembly were sworn in so my 10 year was over. Never figured out where the bathroom was and probably the only Illinois politician to lose money on the deal because I didn't get the salary or per diem."

Ken laughed and then made a joke saying: "You're an Illinois politician and you're not in jail Jay, you did it."

The other two contestants shared a laugh with Ken and Jay, as well as the crowd. Viewers on X, formerly known as Twitter, also though Ken's joke was funny and clever. One person wrote: "And after that joke, Ken’s parents #jeopardy." Another person wrote: "Wow, cheap shot directed at Illinois #Jeopardy." A third person wrote: "What did Illinois do to Ken Jennings #jeopardy."

Jay might have not gotten paid from being a senator for 22 hours but he did when he defeated nine time winner Isaac. Jay went into the Final Jeopardy! round with $16,200. The category was "1960's people" with the hint reading: "He said that Calif. prison psych tests he took were ones he had designed, so he made himself look docile & unlikely to escape; then he did." Everyone got the answer wrong, which was Timothy, and Jay went onto another day on Jeopardy with $1,799.
