Imperial County Sheriff's Deputies investigate arson incident
CALEXICO — Imperial County Sheriff’s Deputies from South County Patrol responded on Wednesday, July 3, 2024, at approximately 6:00 A.M. to the area of East Cole Road and Bowker Road, near Calexico, to investigate a report of a past occurred arson of haystacks in the area. Initial responding Deputies obtained statements and evidence regarding this arson, which happened the night prior.
Arson Suspect Arrested
A man suspected of setting a haystack fire has been arrested. On Wednesday morning, at about 6:00 a.m., Imperial County Sheriff's deputes responded to the area of Cole and Bowker Roads near Calexico to investigate a haystack fire that had occurred in the area. The Imperial County Agriculture Crimes investigators were called out and developed evidence that linked the fire to Robert Lee Law, 47, a transient from Phoenix, Arizona. Law was located, arrested, and booked into Imperial County Jail charged with Arson and Possession of a Dirk or Dagger. Bail was set at $35,000. ICSO investigators are looking to determine if Law was involved in additional arson fires in the area.
Fugitive Apprehended
(Imperial County Sheriff's Office Deputies from the Winterhaven Division make the arrest)...They were assisted by US Marshalls. The fugitive was arrested after attempting to flee. The suspect was wanted for several felonies committed with a firearm in Winterhaven. A family member of the suspect was also arrested for aiding and abetting a felonious felon. The ICSO expressed gratitude to the US Marshalls Office in El Centro for their assistance.
New Agriculture Study Released
(County Board of Supervisors accept a new ag study).....County Ag Commissioner delivered the study to the Supervisors this week. Ag Commissioner Jolene Dessert said the study supplements the annual agricultural report. She said instead of stopping at farm production values, it also quantifies local food processing, employment and economic ripple effects. The study, presented to the Board of Supervisors at their Tuesday meeting, says agriculture pumped just over $5 billion into the local economy in 2022 and supported more than 19,000 jobs. Dessert said to put the contribution in perspective, Imperial County Agriculture pumped nearly $14 million into the county economy per day, or more than $580,000 per hour.. The county's third such study was conducted for the Office of the Agricultural Commissioner by Drs, Jeff Langholz and Fernando DePaolis of Agricultural Impact Associates, a consulting firm specializing in agricultural economics. The report will soon be available at the Ag Commissioners office on Broadway in El Centro.
Feed the Need celebrates 9 years, looks for help to continue serving
BRAWLEY – The everyday hustle and bustle of community service keeps the staff and volunteers of Brawley Feed the Need quite busy. “He hasn’t ate; he just got nachos,” “He wants a plain hotdog,” and “He needs to go to the bathroom” were some of the asks heard during a late morning lunch feeding from needy families. “Who hasn’t gotten a hotdog over here,” and “If you still want more we have more being made; just ask, OK,” were some of the responses on the lips of volunteers as they worked to feed over 35 people for lunch, having already fed more than 60 for breakfast just a few hours earlier.
