‘Survivor’ Recap: Which Castaway Was Voted Off in Season 47, Episode 5, After Reward Challenge Twist?

    By Alyssa Norwin,

After last week's epic blindside on Survivor season 47, things were shaken up at Lavo, and then Jeff Probst announced a whole new twist in the game on the Wednesday, October 16, episode.

What Happened at the Reward Challenge in 'Survivor' Season 47, Episode 5?

The players were confused when they arrived at the reward challenge and saw only two courses, despite three tribes being left. Jeff, 62, confirmed there was going to be a "brand new" twist. There would be a random draw to create two teams of seven players that would only run together for this challenge. The winning team would all gather to celebrate the new "social hour" reward at the sanctuary together.

The yellow team consisted of Sue, Kyle, Teeny, Sam, Rachel, Tiyana and Caroline , while the blue team was Anika, Sol, Rome, Gabe, Andy, Sierra and Genevieve . Both teams had members from all three tribes.

Yellow won the challenge, which meant Teeny was the only player from Lavo on the reward, giving her new hope that she could connect with the players from Tuku (Sue, Kyle, Caroline and Tiyana) and Gata (Rachel and Sam). Teeny immediately let everyone know that she felt on the bottom of Lavo.

Sam and Rachel portrayed Gata as a big happy family. Sue brought up rumors about how close Sierra and Sam are and asked Sam if they were running the show, which he denied. Meanwhile, Tiyana threw suspicion on Gabe by revealing that he already found an idol and is always off looking for more. Sue, who considered Gabe to be her No. 1 ally, was shocked that her tribe member threw him under the bus so easily.

As the group split off, Caroline told Teeny and Rachel that Sue was her No. 1, and the three women formed a bond, with an insinuation that they'd work together -- likely with the other women left -- later in the game.

What Happened at Lavo in 'Survivor' Season 47, Episode 5?

Teeny was "bamboolzed" after her closest ally, Kishan, was voted out last week in a move orchestrated by Genevieve. She also had to deal with the wrath of Rome, who was pissed that Teeny didn't tell him about the original plan to vote him out. Genevieve did damage control and assured Teeny she wasn't on the bottom, while Teeny apologized to Rome and they hugged it out. However, Rome noted in a confessional that his "trust" with her was broken.

While Teeny was on the reward, Rome took the opportunity to speak with Sol to try and patch things up in their relationship. Rome also filled Sol in about the amulet that Teeny earned on her journey -- which she'll be able to use as an idol when paired with the other two amulets -- and warned him that Genevieve doesn't want to work with him. Rome spoke with Genevieve, too, and pointed out that Sol has shown more loyalty to them than Teeny. Genevieve was confused and put off by Rome's scrambling. Plus, she felt Teeny would be the easiest person to work with as her game continued.

Sol approached Genevieve with Rome's confession that she didn't want to work with him long term, while Genevieve revealed that Rome told her he wanted to target Teeny. Learning that Rome was telling both of them different stories immediately sent up red flags for Genevieve.

When Teeny returned to camp, she made it seem like she barely gave up any information on the reward. Genevieve and Sol then filled Teeny in on how Rome "went nuts" after the challenge. Hearing others be concerned about Rome's unpredictability was music to Teeny's ears.

What Happened at Gata in 'Survivor' Season 47, Episode 5?

Andy, Anika and Sierra had a tough afternoon as they struggled to catch fish to fill themselves up. Sam and Rachel returned and filled their tribemates in on what happened, but Sam left out the part about how Sue called out him and Sierra as the tribe leaders. However, he filled Sierra in on what really happened later on. Hearing that other tribes were onto them pushed Sierra toward her "breadwinners" alliance with Rachel and Anika, but she had to decide if she wanted to work with them or with Andy and Sam moving forward.

What Happened at Tuku in 'Survivor' Season 47, Episode 5?

Sue told Gabe about how Tiyana threw him under the bus at the reward. However, Caroline wanted the remaining five Tuku members to work together during the merge and was worried about how they were falling apart. She tried to do damage control by urging Tiyana to tell Gabe the truth before he found out from someone else at the merge. Tiyana agreed that it was the right thing to do and approached Gabe with (part of) the truth, but Gabe still didn't trust her.

Gabe accepted the "BS apology," but then spoke to Sue to find out the truth, and she informed him that Tiyana wasn't being 100 percent truthful in her account about what she said on the reward.

What Happened at the Immunity Challenge in 'Survivor' Season 47, Episode 5?

Gata came to the immunity challenge with a negotiation. They pointed out that their chickens hadn't been laying any eggs, while the second place team at the last challenge got six eggs handed to them. They asked to trade the chickens for 24 eggs and, after some countering, they agreed with Jeff on an 18 egg for three chickens trade.

The challenge required the players to drag a bag of sandbags and coconuts through a course, collecting even more along the way. Gata had an early setback when Andy struggled to saw down one of the bags at the first station. They then had to throw the sandbags at a large block wall and knock down all the pieces before rebuilding the puzzle correctly.

Tuku won the challenge and Gata and Lavo were neck-in-neck as the minutes ticked down. Lavo finished first, sending Gata to tribal council. They also lost their flint, therefore losing the ability to cook the eggs they negotiated so hard for.

Who Went Home in 'Survivor' Season 47, Episode 5?

Andy was immediately targeted by his tribe members due to his poor performance in the challenge. Going into tribal, Anika had no vote after losing it on a previous journey, but felt confident about her alliance and place in the game.

Andy told Anika and Rachel that he was willing to work with them if they threw him a lifeline. He wanted them to believe he felt like he was on the bottom because he was still keeping his alliance with Sam and Sierra top secret. The women fell right into his trap and told him a fake plan about targeting Sam.

Sam and Andy didn't trust Anika and wanted to vote her out with Sierra. However, Sierra was hesitant and she let Sam know it. She knew keeping Andy was best for Sam's game, but didn't know if it was the best for her game.

Meanwhile, Sam had an immunity idol that wouldn't be good past this tribal council. Sierra warned him that when he played his idol, Andy would be blindsided since he didn't know about it, so Sam considered voting out Andy to avoid the backlash. Sam and Sierra were in the middle and had to decide whether they wanted Andy or Anika to go home.

Anika received three votes, while Rachel was the only one who voted for Andy (since Anika lost her vote). Anika was completely blindsided by being voted off and took several minutes to leave the tribal council area. Meanwhile, Sam decided not to play his idol at all so he wouldn't have to explain himself to Andy back at camp.
