Liam Payne died from fracturing his skull and sustaining “very serious injuries” after a fall from a hotel balcony, In Touch can confirm.

Buenos Aires emergency services chief Alberto Crescenti revealed the singer’s cause of death on Wednesday, October 16, hours after his tragic passing at age 31. He confirmed that Liam's injuries were "incompatible with life" and added, "According to the emergency medical team sent to the scene, [Liam] had a fracture in the base of his skull [and] extremely serious injuries,” which led to his immediate death .

A preliminary autopsy was done on Thursday, October 17, and forensic pathologists Santiago Maffia Bizzozero and Victor Roberto Cohen also concluded that Liam died from multiple injuries, which led to "internal and external hemmorhaging."

Officials would not comment on whether Liam, 31, was under the influence of alcohol or drugs at the time of his death and further tests are being done to determine whether any substances contributed to the star's passing.

Liam fell from the third floor – about 14 meters, according to La Nacion – of CasaSur Palermo Hotel in Argentina. “The entire body had very serious injuries,” the local outlet reported.

The former One Direction singer had been in Argentina for more than two weeks after arriving on September 30 with girlfriend Kate Cassidy . The two attended Niall Horan’s concert on October 2 and Liam looked to be in good spirits as he danced in the crowd in videos captured by fans. After rising to fame in One Direction throughout the 2010s, Liam began pursuing a solo career once the band disbanded in 2016. He also started a family with ex Cheryl (formerly known as Cheryl Cole) when they welcomed a son , Bear, now 7, in 2017. Just months before his death, Liam began working on a new project as a judge on Netflix’s Building the Band alongside Nicole Scherzinger and Kelly Rowland .

The “Strip That Down” singer had previously opened up about how his days in One Direction were filled with “booze and pills.” He admitted that that time in his life was “fun,” but said that “certain parts” got “a little bit toxic.” Liam has also been open about some of his mental health and anxiety issues, including his 2019 confession that he “developed a bit of agoraphobia” and “would never leave the house.”

In an interview with Esquire , he added, “I do sometimes suffer with it a bit in the sense that I’ll get days where I just don’t want to leave my house. Even if it’s just going to the shop.” Agoraphobia is “fearing and avoiding places or situations that might cause panic and feelings of being trapped, helpless or embarrassed,” according to the Mayo Clinic. “The anxiety is caused by fear that there's no easy way to escape or get help if the anxiety gets overwhelming.”

Liam spent 100 days in rehab in 2023 and revealed that June that he was six months sober. “I just needed to take a little bit of time out for myself actually because I kind of became somebody who I didn’t really recognize anymore,” he said at the time. “And I’m sure you guys didn’t either. I was in bad shape up until that point and I was really happy to kind of put a stopper to life and work.”

Saw some photos cocaine alcohol, a ravished room of broken things I also heard he was in a rage and ran off the balcony. I’m sure it was an accident, considering something was wrong starting out with the breaking of his laptop. Could it have been something to do with girlfriend issues I must say there’s a big age gap clearly intellectually that is ….but he’s a popstar what do you expect? Who else are you gonna be dating

He didn't fall. He jumped. And ot wasn't depression that caused it either. It was getting caught doing things he shouldn't have been doing and not watching who he was doing it with. It's a straight James Charles situation with a twist.
