Liam Payne‘s former fiancée, Maya Henry, has been flooded with messages of both hate and support after the singer’s death, which occurred two days after the model said she was told she would be “blamed” if something happened to him.

Liam died after falling off a third-floor balcony at his hotel in Buenos Aires, Argentina, on Wednesday, October 16. He was 31 years old. Maya retained a legal team that issued a cease-and-desist letter on her behalf to Liam days before he died, the Daily Mail reported.

“Are you happy now?” several users asked, while others wrote, “It’s your fault.” One person chided Maya, “Won’t be needing those lawyers anymore. Yes… likely your fault,” while another cruelly asked, “Did you push him?”

However, there were also messages of support. “ITS NOT YOUR FAULT HE’S RESPONSIBLE FOR HIS OWN ACTIONS,” one fan wrote, while another added, “She’s not responsible for another persons actions, chronically online people love to pin the blame on someone and try to make someone out to be the villain.”

“OMG stop, she has nothing to do with this,” one user commented, while another wrote, “People blaming her for Liam’s death is so stupid. Victims are allowed to tell their stories, she couldn’t have foreseen this death happening. You all need to grow up.”

Liam and Maya began dating in 2019 and got engaged in August 2020. They briefly split in June 2021 but quickly rekindled their romance. The former couple called it quits for good in April 2022.

The One Direction alum began dating social media influencer Kate Cassidy in the fall of 2022. They were still together at the time of his death.

Maya released the fictional book, Looking Forward, in May, telling People at the time that it was “definitely inspired by true events.” The book follows Mallory Hunt, who eventually ends up dating 5Forward! boy band member Oliver Smith. The characters experience a toxic relationship, including an ultimatum about keeping or terminating a pregnancy.

The Texas native was told she would be blamed if something happened to Liam, which she revealed during the Monday, October 14, episode of “The Internet Is Dead” podcast.

“Even until my book was coming out, even one of his friends was calling me and my mom being like, ‘You know, this isn’t a good time for [Liam], I don’t think you should put the book out,’” she recalled. “‘He’s not doing well, and if something happens to him, you’re not only going to blame yourself – but the whole world is going to blame you.'”

“He would always play with death and be like, ‘Well, I’m going to die. I’m not doing well,” Maya continued.

“There was one time I tried to get him help and then he was not taking it,” she added of her ex. “He would text my mom: ‘I’m not doing well, have Maya contact me,’ because I wouldn’t respond.”

The model shared an eight-minute TikTok video on October 6, captioned, “Sorry for the rant but things need to be addressed,” where she claimed Liam had been trying to obsessively contact her.

“Ever since we broke up, he messages me, blows up my phone… always from different phone numbers,” Maya explained.

“He’ll create new iCloud accounts to message me. It’s always a new iCloud account” she continued, “Also would email me. He would do this when his phone was taken away. Not only me, He would also blow up my mom’s phone.”

“Maya Henry issued a cease-and-desist last week to Liam Payne following the emergence of new and concerning information,” her legal team told the Daily Mail on Monday, October 14. “She has retained attorneys Marco Crawford and Daniel Cerna to represent her. At this time, that is her only comment on the matter.”

Liam “was extremely overwhelmed by all of the legal issues” with Maya, a source told People the day after his death. The “Teardrops” singer died from fracturing his skull and sustaining “very serious injuries” after the hotel balcony fall, In Touch confirmed.
