Court fight tests Washington’s protections for tenants threatened with eviction
When a tenant in Washington faces eviction, it’s possible they can reach a settlement agreement with their landlord that allows them to stay in their home. A state law approved in 2021 bars these agreements from forcing renters to waive certain protections – things like rights to mediation of tenant-landlord disagreements, rent repayment plans, and 14-day eviction notices.

First heat wave of the season will bring scorching temps in the 90s and 100s across the region
Excessive Heat Alerts are in place across all of Washington, most of Oregon and Idaho this week as triple-digit temperatures arrive during the first heat wave of the year. From Saturday to Friday, the Inland Northwest will be under either an Excessive Heat Warning or Advisory as daytime highs reach well into the 90s and triple digits, especially by Tuesday and Wednesday -- Spokane is under the warning. Sunday's forecast highs will trend in the low-to-high 90s for most of eastern Washington and North Idaho, with Spokane's high temperature expected to reach 96 degrees. However, places like Lewiston, Tri-Cities, and Vantage will cruise into the triple digits.
State experiencing heat and fires
The National Weather Service (NWS) is forecasting temperatures in the high 90s on the western edge of the Cascades and around the Puget Sound region in the days ahead. The weather in Darrington could hit 102 degrees on Tuesday, according to NWS. In Eastern Washington, it’s even hotter. Spokane could see highs of 105 or 106 on Tuesday and Wednesday.
