Publix Super Markets announced another store opening in Northern Kentucky, this time in at a roughly 20-acre development in Independence.

It's the third store the trendy Florida-based company has confirmed in Northern Kentucky – one each in Boone, Kenton and Campbell counties. The Enquirer reported in June the company purchased land for a fourth grocery at the 11-acre Farmview Commons in Florence, bringing the grand total of expected new grocery stores to four.

A grocery chain doing $57 billion in sales annually , Publix has 1,360 supermarkets with more than three-quarters of its stores in Florida and Georgia, where it is a major player. In the last five years, more than half its new store openings have been in other southeast states: Alabama, North Carolina, South Carolina, Tennessee and Virginia.

In 2021, Publix disclosed plans to expand into an eighth state: Kentucky. The first store opened in Louisville in January. The company also announced plans to open stores in Lexington .

The company is challenging Kroger's dominance in the region where it has more than a 50% market share, according to Tampa-based industry-tracker Chain Store Guide. Walmart controls more than 21% of the region’s grocery sales through its namesake supercenters and its Sam’s Club subsidiary. Meijer is a distant No. 3 grocer with 8% market share.

    Independence location

The Enquirer reported last year that a new grocery store was slated to open on nearly 20 acres of land at the northeast intersection of Madison Pike and Harris Pike in Independence, located in the middle of Kenton County.

According to a concept development plan at the time, the 48,387-square-foot facility would also include a 3,200-square-foot liquor store, a 12,600-square-foot retail store and 320 parking spaces on one of two lots included in plans.

A 2,584-square-foot restaurant with a drive-through and 43 parking spaces was slated to be built on the second lot.

A construction timeline and opening date was not confirmed by the company Monday.

Triple Crown Shopping Center in Boone County

The first Publix was confirmed for the southwest corner of Triple Crown Boulevard and Richwood Road.

The store is slated to open in 2025.

    Cold Spring Pointe

A second Publix was confirmed in April at a development called Cold Spring Pointe at the southeast corner of Ky. 9/AA Highway and Alexandria Pike.

The 48,387-square-foot store will be part of a strip mall planned on just over 53 acres on multiple parcels that will include retail space, an office building and a gas station.

It will employ around 140 associates. It's unclear when the supermarket will be open.

    Farmview Commons in Boone County

Publix has not confirmed whether it's opening a second store in Boone County, which would be the company's fourth in Northern Kentucky.

But The Enquirer confirmed with Todd Morgan, senior zoning planner for Boone County, that a Publix is planned for a site at the Farmview Commons, which borders Florence and Union on U.S. Highway 42 for $4 million in May.

Morgan said the grocery store will be roughly 56,000 square feet with an attached 3,200-square-foot liquor store and a drive-through pharmacy.
