Ratan Tata, a titan of Indian industry and Chairman Emeritus of the Tata Sons conglomerate passed away on October 9 in Mumbai. He was 86 years old. Earlier this year in March, Tata opened a hospital for small animals in Mumbai, which became his last large-scale philanthropic project. In 2008, the Indian government also honored Tata with the Padma Vibhushan, the country’s second-highest civilian honor.

In the hours since his death, influential personalities from the worlds of business and politics paid tribute to his legacy. In a social media post , Prime Minister Narendra Modi wrote that Tata “was a visionary business leader, a compassionate soul and an extraordinary human being.”

Leader of Opposition Rahul Gandhi also offered his condolences , saying that “Tata was a man with a vision. He has left a lasting mark on both business and philanthropy.”
