Last Saturday morning overcast, cooler conditions brought a modest reprieve to much of the intense heat and humidity that swimmers and onlookers had faced in recent weeks when Smallwood Village hosted the Prince-Mont Division C Swim Championships.

Smallwood Village and Indian Head were both well represented in the boys and girls individual events and relays last Saturday morning and several of them performed well enough to earn a berth in this Saturday’s Prince-Mont All-Star meet at Temple Hills. Prince George’s Parks and Recreation won the team title with 321 points, while Indian Head (201) took third and Smallwood (153) placed fifth.

Indian Head’s Edison Wright won the 9-10 boys’ 25 butterfly (18.09), 50 free (33.39) and completed his triple by taking the 25 breast (21.22). Teammate Dakotah Boykin took the 11-12 boys’ 50 fly (32.97), 50 free (28.71) and 100 IM (1:16.35) to record a triple as well.

Indian Head swimmer Ezra Rodriguez won the 11-12 boys’ 50 breast (40.22) and Jackson Walter took the 13-14 boys’ 50 back (35.15) and was second in the 100 IM (1:17.54). Carolina Walter was second in the 15-18 girls’ 50 back and third in the 100 IM. Liberty Bradley took third in the girls’ 8-under 25 back and was seventh in the 25 free.

Indian Head swimmer Naomi Dugan competed in the penultimate outing of her Prince-Mont career by winning three events last Saturday. Dugan captured the 15-18 girls’ 100-meter freestyle (1:03.18), the 50 breaststroke (36.03) and the 100 Individual Medley (1:11.81) and now will compete in all three events this weekend in the Prince-Mont All-Star meet in her swimming career finale.

“I’m glad that I was able to win my events today and have the chance to compete at All-Stars,” Dugan said. “It’s going to be my last swim meet. I’ve had a lot of fun over the years. I know my events are going to be tough. I’m hoping to win the 100 IM, but I know that event is going to be tough. There are girls that can go 1:08 in there.

Smallwood Village swimmer Rylin Mussante captured the 15-18 girls’ 50 fly (32.20) in a new team record clocking and was later fourth in the 50 breast. Amanda Cartwright was second to Dugan in the 100 free and later placed fifth in the 100 IM. Dominic Dismuke was second in the 13-14 boys’ 50 back, while teammate Lamont Spriggs was second in the 15-18 boys’ 50 back and third in the 100 IM.

“I was really excited to be able to drop time in my events today,” said Cartwright, a recent Thomas Stone High School graduate who is heading to St. Mary’s College of Maryland this fall. “I really wasn’t expecting to drop any time today. I’m really excited to be able to make it to All-Stars for the 100 free and I think our 200 medley relay is going.”

Swimmers from Hawthorne, Indian Head, Smallwood Village, Westlake Village and Bannister are slated to compete at the all-star meet at Temple Hills beginning at 9 a.m. on July 27.
