Xavier basketball recruiting: XU coaches hit the road for another evaluation period
The July recruiting season is coming to an end over the course of the next week. Coaches are back out on the road from Friday to Sunday this weekend to finish off the shoe company events. Then there's another evaluation period from Tuesday to Thursday for the NCAA College Basketball Academy.
OUTAGES ACROSS THE COUNTRY AFFECT WHITEWATER VALLEY
There is developing overnight national and international news that is affecting us here in the Whitewater Valley. There have been IT outages across the country that are affecting airports, banks, and some 911 services. It appears to be connected to Microsoft. At 4:30 this morning, Union County dispatchers indicated that both their 911 and non-emergency lines are down. Butler County is reporting similar 911 outages. There have also been reports of bank cards not working. There are also major affects at airports across the country, including at our two closest. Major air carriers have asked the FAA for a global ground stop on all flights. Our two closest airports air having issues. In Dayton, some flight statuses are now listed as either unknown or delayed. At Cincinnati, outbound travelers are not able to check in for their flights. National security officials are saying all of the issues are not the result of a cyber attack, but are pointing the finger at a computer glitch by the firm Crowdstrike.
Ohio sees uptick in unemployment rate, lost jobs in June
COLUMBUS, Ohio — New economic data from the state shows that Ohio saw an uptick in its unemployment rate, and that it lost jobs in the month of June. Ohio lost 2,300 jobs during June from the revised May estimate, dropping the total employment to 5,652,900 jobs, according to figures released Friday by the Ohio Department of Job and Family Services. The state also did not add as many jobs in May as previously thought.
How the global outage is — or isn't — affecting Greater Cincinnati companies and communities
Local communities and companies are dealing with the fallout from Friday morning's Microsoft/CrowdStrike outage. Some area 911 services went offline. Butler County reported its 911 services were back up before 8 a.m., while Kenton County said it was still trying to get its non-emergency phones back up. 911 is still working there. Hamilton County EMA tells WVXU it was not affected.
Cincinnati’s Junior Guard Olympics celebrates young lifeguards
(Cincinnati): Cheer on Cincy Rec’s future generation of Lifeguards at CRC’s Junior Guard Olympics on Saturday, July 20th from 10 AM to 2 PM at Ryan Pool. For the past 6 weeks, CRC’s award-winning Junior Lifeguard program has provided the building blocks and training for youths 11 to 14 to master the Red Cross Lifeguarding Certification. Over 70 Junior Guards will compete in water and on land to display the skills they have learned and honed over the summer months. Junior guards compete for the gold in events mirroring Red Cross certifications, adult CPR, active victim, water tread, brick retrieval, kick relay, and more. Awards for individual, team times, and point totals, celebrate their work as they move closer to receiving a whistle, lanyard, and becoming a CRC Red Cross Certified Lifeguard!

Researcher Samantha Boch has studied the impact of incarceration on child and family health for more than a decade. Her latest research examines the health records and health care use of youth, individuals under age 21, who likely have been involved or whose families have been involved in the justice system. The challenge was identifying youth who have been impacted by mass incarceration, as most health care systems don’t routinely ask about incarceration. Families may not disclose that information due to stigma, fear of child protective services involvement, or judgment.
