FORMER WESTMORELAND COUNTY DA PASSES AWAY
A Westmoreland County DA who helped prosecute two high-profile cases that involved Indiana County has passed away. Former Westmoreland County District Attorney John Peck of New Kensington died Thursday at a Pittsburgh-area hospital. He started in Westmoreland County’s District Attorney’s office in 1981 and was prosecuting cases as a part-time assistant before he was elected DA in 1994. He left the office at the end of 2021 after he failed to win a re-election bid.
INDIANA, MARION CENTER BOARDS TO MEET ON MONDAY
School board meetings in July are rare, but there are two Indiana County boards scheduled to meet tomorrow. Indiana Area’s board president, Walter Schroth, will report to the board on the ICTC situation. The River Valley School District has notified ICTC of its intention to pull out of its commitment to the technical school, and there are important ramifications for all of the other districts in the county if River Valley is leaves.
INDIANA 14U ALL-STARS OPEN FRIDAY SLATE WITH WIN
After shutting out Delaware, 9-0, on Thursday, the Indiana County 14U Junior League All-Stars broke out the bats again in a 11-1 rout of Bristol, Connecticut this morning. Indiana scored six runs in the first, three of those coming on a home run by Rylee Mahaffey. They added two more in the sixth and three in the third while Mahaffey and Sam Martin combined for five innings of one-run ball.

INDIANA COUNTY SHINES FOR PENNSYLVANIA IN 14U EAST REGIONAL
What an opener for the Pennsylvania entry in the Little League 14U Eastern Regional Junior Softball Tournament in Orange, Connecticut. The Indiana Junior League All-Stars belted 11 hits and routed Delaware, 9-0. Kaitlyn Houser hit a two-run home run. Gracie Reed and Tenley Anderson each had a double. Rylee Mahaffey and Claire Brewer combined for the shutout. Mahaffey struck out 8 and gave up just one hit in her three innings and brewer finished up with four K’s and also gave up just one hit. Indiana was clean in the field too, with no errors.
SECOND STRUCTURE FIRE, AUTOMATIC ALARMS REPORTED WEDNESDAY
Along with last night’s fire in Homer City, there were just a few other calls for first responders over the last 24 hours in Indiana County. The only other major call was another reported structure fire along Mahoning Road in Cherry Tree Borough. Cherry Tree, Commodore, and Hope Fire Departments were dispatched at 10:55 PM. Details on that fire have not yet been released.
