Indiana’s ILEARN test scores are flat

Indiana’s ILEARN state standardized test results show that students in grades 3-8 in Indiana are still struggling to make progress. This continues a trend of learning loss following the COVID-19 pandemic.

The latest ILEARN scores reveal that 41% of Indiana students met proficiency standards in English and Language Arts (ELA) this spring. This is almost the same as last year, when 40.7% were proficient.

In math, there was a slight decrease in proficiency. This year, 40.7% of students met the standards, down from 40.9% last year.

About 30.8% of students passed both the math and English sections of ILEARN. This is a small increase from last year’s 30.6%.

Nearly 493,000 students took the exams this spring.

Compared to 2019, ILEARN scores are still lower. In 2019, about 48% of students passed both the English and math sections. But due to the changes in instruction during the pandemic, the 2021 scores are now used as the baseline.

From this baseline, ELA proficiency has increased in most grades. However, third graders saw a small decrease. Math proficiency has increased across all grades since 2021, but dropped compared to 2023, except in seventh grade.

The ILEARN test replaced the ISTEP exam in 2019. It measures proficiency in various subjects, focusing on English/language arts and mathematics. All students are tested in person and electronically, unless they need a paper assessment.

The test was not given in 2020 due to school closures from the pandemic.
