STATEWIDE — There is still a shortage of blood available in Indiana that hospitals are in need of to help patients.

Versiti Blood Center of Indiana is one of the primary organizations that supplies over 60 hospitals throughout the state with blood. On average, they say they collect around 130,000 units of blood a year, but Versiti leaders say they are on track to fall short of that benchmark.

They are asking you to donate as much as you are able.

“We are experiencing an urgent need for O-negative blood in particular, and O-positive blood, but we need all blood types,” said Penny Schroeder, who is the Area VP for Versiti Blood Center of Indiana.

Schroeder told WISH-TV that they get a good portion of their donations from high school and college students and teachers since they partner with many schools throughout the state. With the school year having been out the last few months, she said they typically experience a lull in donations during the summer.

With schools slowly getting back into session this month, she said it will take a while for donations to amp back up.

If you would like to donate blood the process to sign up to do so is simple. Schroeder urges you to go to versity.org, visit any blood center, or attend local blood drives. Versiti has blood centers in Indianapolis, Carmel, Fishers, Greenwood, and Terre Haute.
