Discover Antique Coverlets with Collector John Simmermaker

This Sunday, history and textile enthusiasts have a unique opportunity to delve into the world of antique coverlets with John Simmermaker, a renowned collector from Pulaski County. The Indiana State Museum is hosting the special event "Meet the Collector: John Simmermaker," where attendees will get an up-close look at his impressive collection.

Since his first acquisition in 1972, Simmermaker and his family have amassed over 700 examples of historic coverlets, including a significant number of Indiana Jacquards. These textiles are not just pieces of fabric but woven narratives of history, showcasing rare dyes, intricate motifs, and the trademarks of nearly every known Indiana weaver.

Simmermaker's expertise is recognized nationally; he's a member of the Colonial Coverlet Guild of America and has displayed his collection at prestigious venues like the Midwest Museum of American Art and the National Museum of the American Coverlet.

The event takes place on Sun, May 19, from 1pm to 3pm at the Indiana State Museum, located at 650 W Washington St, Indianapolis, IN. It's a chance to see parts of the Woven Together exhibition's coverlets, selected from the Simmermaker family collection, and to learn about the stories each piece carries.
