Today is a big day at the Indianapolis Zoo.

The Pacific walruses are back in their habitat and can be viewed by guests starting today.

The zoo announced last week in a clip shared to Facebook that the walrus exhibit would reopen on July 1.

    Where were the Indy walruses?

"Exciting News! Pacific walruses Ginger and Aku are back and splashing around their newly remodeled habitat!" the zoo shared in an Instagram post Monday.

The walruses are now back in Indy after spending the last 18 months at Sea World in Orlando while their habitat was being renovated, according to the zoo's post on Instagram.

"We’re grateful for the world-class care Ginger and Aku received from the great team at SeaWorld Orlando," the zoo said in an Instagram post.

    Pacific walrus facts

While walruses are related to seals and sea lions, they stand out due to their size and tusks, according to the zoo's website. Pacific walruses are about 10 feet long and usually weigh 3,000 pounds or more.

They usually live in arctic regions and while they are not currently considered an endangered species, they are threatened by the loss of sea ice due to the climate crisis.

To learn more about the walruses you can check the Indianapolis Zoo's website.
